Beyond Blue is encouraging Australians to participate in their Big Blue Table initiative this October, aligning with Mental Health Month. The campaign invites individuals to host meals—whether it’s a casual sandwich gathering or a hearty stir-fry event—to raise awareness and funds for mental health. The goal of these get-togethers is to provide early support and intervention before mental health issues escalate to crisis levels, fostering a sense of well-being from the outset.
The Big Blue Table initiative is designed to challenge and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health through shared meals and conversations. Participants can register at bigbluetable.com.au to host an event in any setting—be it a home, workplace, park, or sports club. These events create safe spaces where friends, family, and colleagues can openly discuss mental health, helping to normalize these important conversations.
Funds raised from Big Blue Table events will support Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service, which offers free counseling, advice, and referrals through phone, web chat, and email. This service is crucial, as it assists over 800 individuals daily, providing them with immediate support and resources.
Georgie Harman, CEO of Beyond Blue, emphasized the importance of connection and community in addressing mental health challenges. “Sharing a meal can be a powerful way to combat the isolation and stigma often felt by those facing mental health issues,” Harman noted. She stressed that these gatherings are not just about raising funds but also about fostering connections and showing support, making individuals feel less alone in their struggles.
Since its inception in 2019, the Big Blue Table initiative has seen over 5,000 participants across Australia, collectively raising nearly $1 million for mental health support. This year, Big Blue Table ambassadors Dr. Matt Agnew, Julie Goodwin, and Nat’s What I Reckon are returning to lend their support.
